In a recent interview with Meltdown on Detroit’s WRIF radio station, Sully Erna discussed Godsmack’s decision to release their latest album, ‘Lighting Up the Sky,’ as their final collection of new material. When asked if he and his bandmates were working on any new music, Sully replied, ‘No. There won’t be any more new Godsmack music. I mean, you never know what the future holds, but we’ve decided to focus on honoring the catalog we’ve built over the last 30 years and enjoying the greatest hits moments.’
Meltdown pointed out that many artists are shifting away from albums and focusing on releasing singles. Erna agreed, saying, ‘It seems like the smart thing to do these days. People aren’t buying full albums anymore. They create playlists of their favorite songs. So, it’s fitting for this era. But for us, it’s also an opportunity to celebrate the album format that we grew up with. We don’t want to spend years pouring our hearts and souls into an album only for people to pick out a few singles and move on.
‘Plus, we have a lot of hit songs,’ Erna continued. ‘With 27 Top Tens, we can’t even play them all in one night. I’m grateful for our success, but it’s also a reality. When I see my favorite bands, like Aerosmith or Metallica, I don’t want to hear their new album. I want to hear the classics. I think our fans expect the same from us.’
