Fred Durst Sues Universal Music Group for Unpaid Royalties

Limp Bizkit frontman Fred Durst has filed a lawsuit against his former record label, Universal Music Group, alleging that he and his band are owed millions in unpaid royalties. The lawsuit, filed in California federal court, claims that UMG implemented a “systemic” and “fraudulent” policy to conceal royalties from artists.

Durst alleges that despite selling over 45 million records and accumulating hundreds of millions of streams, he has never received a single royalty from Universal. The lawsuit seeks $20 million in damages but claims the total amount owed could easily surpass $200 million.

According to the lawsuit, UMG told Durst’s representatives that he needed to recoup millions of dollars before receiving any royalties. However, Durst’s team discovered that the band’s original label, Flip Records, had earned significant profits from its partnership with UMG.

The lawsuit accuses UMG of rescission, contract violation, fraudulent concealment, breach of fiduciary duty, intentional and negligent misrepresentation, and copyright infringement.
