Ian Hill Says It Was Important For Judas Priest To Retain Its ‘Signature Sound’ When Hiring New Guitarists

In a recent interview with Charlie Kendall’s Metalshop, Judas Priest bassist Ian Hill discussed how the band’s signature sound remains intact despite lineup changes. He explained the importance of retaining their identity when integrating new guitarists, Richie Faulkner and Andy Sneap.

“We have a long history,” Hill said. “There’s no point in fans hearing a 30-year-old song sound completely different. It has to retain the essence they expect.”

He elaborated on Faulkner’s assimilation: “Richie’s been with us for over a decade. Initially, he played alongside Glenn Tipton. They collaborated, and Glenn passed on his knowledge, similar to how K.K. Downing might have done during his first tour. With newer albums, Richie found his own voice, no longer filling someone else’s shoes.”

The same goes for Andy Sneap, who produced “Firepower” before joining the band. “He knew the new material inside out,” Hill explained. “Learning a song becomes easier when you already understand it. Plus, Andy’s a massive fan, familiar with all the classics. He was the perfect fit.”

“He’s grown immensely over his tours,” Hill continued. “His stage presence is phenomenal. We maintain that signature sound, and that’s crucial.”
