An aggressive critic of musicians and others he felt were motivated by money or popularity rather than the music itself, he famously refused to take royalties from the recordings he produced for other artists.
He was known for working with artists like Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey, and Ty Segall. He was also a member of several bands, including Big Black, Rapeman, Shellac, and Pigface. Having worked on an estimated 2,000 albums, there’s a high chance you’ve heard his work.
