The Who Celebrates 60 Years with a Unique Collectible: Stamps!

The Who has found a creative way to commemorate their 60th anniversary: a special set of commemorative stamps. This niche collectible is sure to be a hit for fans and collectors alike.

Royal Mail revealed details of 12 stamps featuring iconic imagery. Eight showcase the band’s most popular album covers, from “My Generation” (1965) to “Who” (2019). The remaining four stamps include two group publicity shots and two images of the band’s live performances: the Marquee Club in London (1967) and Kings Hall in Belle Vue, Manchester (1973).

Formed in 1964 (originally as The Detours and briefly as The High Numbers), The Who quickly rose to stardom. Within five years, they went from playing clubs to headlining Woodstock and becoming a global phenomenon.

“The artwork on the album sleeves was almost as important to the success of the record as the music,” said Roger Daltrey. “It’s great to be reminded of them.”

Pete Townshend added his own humorous take: “Stamp! Stamp! Stamp! It’s what I’ve done on stage all my life, sometimes in the air. At last, my stamping, and that of my buddy Roger, has been honored properly! These stamps will help letters, parcels, and birthday cards travel through time and space, just as we have.”

David Gold, Royal Mail’s Director of External Affairs and Policy, echoed the band’s influence: “The Who are rock royalty, known for their original sound and ability to blend musical styles. These stamps celebrate one of the UK’s most beloved and revered bands who have achieved global popularity for six decades.”

The new Royal Mail special edition stamps celebrating The Who’s 60th anniversary will be available to purchase on October 17th from the Royal Mail website. Pre-orders are open now.
